The latest Daily Paintworks challenge was all about how various colors enliven each other.
I dug out my color wheel and chose a split complementary scheme (blue and the colors adjoining it's true complement, red-orange to yellow-orange).
For non-artists reading this: Painting without a foundation in color theory is like writing a novel with no understanding of grammar - it basically doesn't work. I've been painting color intuitively for so many years I figured this would be pretty easy. I have to admit I was surprised by how difficult it was! I tend to dive in and not pre-plan my color scheme. This was a reminder about the importance of

I am a diver right in myself, Jane. For you, however, the results are always beautiful. So planning (and this piece is gorgeous, by the way) or no planning, your work is always top of the line.

ReplyDeleteI agree, the challenge was more difficult than imagined. I'm not geared to that painting approach. It proves I just need more practice in that direction. But I would never give up my freewheeling way of painting.
